WASHINGTON CROSSING, Pa., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Hundreds gathered on the banks of the Delaware River to see the 61st annual re-enactment of George Washington's famous crossing from Pennsylvania to New Jersey.

John Godzieba -- whose quest to portray Washington for a three-year term at the Christmas Day re-enactments was chronicled by a documentary produced by the (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger -- led more than a hundred actors portraying Washington's Continental Army troops for a re-enactment of the crossing that allowed the revolutionaries to mount a surprise attack and turn the tide of the Revolutionary War, the Star-Ledger reported Thursday.

"It's a lot of work, understanding the role," Godzieba said. "A couple of my officers are on sick call today so we're making do without them."
