DUDLEY, England, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A British couple dressed as the main characters from the "Shrek" films for their wedding to help the event raise awareness of cancer.

Amanda and Nathan Gibbs of Kingswinford, England, said they dressed as Shrek and Princess Fiona for their wedding at Priory Park in Dudley, England, after losing several friends to cancer and hearing of Nathan Gibbs' sister being diagnosed with breast cancer, Sky News reported Monday.

"We wanted to do something to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage more people to go and get checked out," Nathan Gibbs said.

"It was a standing joke between us. All our friends started getting married and I said 'When we do it we'll have a fairytale wedding. I'll be Shrek and you can be Princess Fiona,'" he said. "Earlier this year we held a fundraiser for Cancer Research and we were talking about what else we could do when 'Shrek' came on the TV. We turned to each other and laughed."

Guests at the wedding joined in on the fantasy theme with costumes including the gingerbread man, Mickey Mouse and Capt. Jack Sparrow from "Pirates of the Caribbean."
