Twins born prematurely eight days apart in Canada

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- In a birthing rarity, twin brothers came into the world eight days apart in Canada, prematurely and with doctors' help, their mother says.

Edonna Bean recently went into labor at the 25-week point of her pregnancy and her son Emyr, weighing just 1 pound, 14 ounces, was born at IWK Health Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday. Eight days later, Esai was born by Caesarean section.

Bean, who traveled from Bermuda to Halifax have her babies, called Emyr her "little miracle."

"I'll never forget that, as long as I live," she said.

Bean said Emyr's exit from her womb gave Esai more room to move around for several days.

"Each day that I woke up he was relaxing and playing and having a good old time with the extra space. It was wonderful," she said.

While her contractions let up, doctors decided to perform the C-section because Bean developed an infection.

The CBC said it was only the second case of twins being separated by birth at the the hospital in 25 years.

"It'll just be more birthday celebrations," Bean said.
