Man proposes at popular Christmas market in Manchester, England

Dec. 2, 2013 at 6:23 PM

MANCHESTER, England, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- A British Christmas market came to a temporary halt when shoppers stopped to watch a man drop to one knee and propose to his girlfriend.

Peter Smith-Robinson, 27, dropped to one knee during the weekend shopping rush at Exchange Square in Manchester, England, and shoppers watched him on the marker's big screen as he popped the question to girlfriend Abbigail Burke, 26, the Manchester Evening News reported Monday.

Burke, who quickly accepted the proposal, said the moment was "like a dream."

"I wanted to cry but I couldn't as so many people were watching," she said. "It was just so romantic."

Smith-Robinson said the Christmas markets "are a very special place" for the couple.

"I was quite confident she would say yes because we are so close but when she actually did it was just amazing," he said.
