Transport Canada's Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System registered an SOS signal Nov. 14 indicating a British Airways Boeing 777 passenger liner crashed in the area near Avery's Farm Market in Berwick, Nova Scotia, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.
The area was searched using a helicopter and an Aurora aircraft before authorities learned the plane suspected of crashing had landed safely in Atlanta.
April Huntley, a supervisor at Avery's Farm Market, said authorities determined the SOS signal had come from the store's security system. However, they were unable to explain why the years-old security system emitted a signal mistaken for an airplane SOS.
"We're not really sure why the signal was coming from the security system," Huntley said.
Canadian officials said the incident is being investigated.
