Lost dog reunited with owner after being seen on TV

MIAMI, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A disabled dog from Miami who made the news after he was found wandering the streets in a doggy wheelchair has been reunited with his owner.

The dog, a 7-year-old male Schnauzer named Puppy whose back legs are paralyzed, was found walking around in northwest Miami-Dade, using his custom-made wheelchair that supports his hind legs, The Miami Herald reported.

The person that found Puppy brought him to Miami-Dade Animal Services, which issued a public plea for the owner.

Several media outlets featured news stories about the dog.

"We knew this was a special dog with an owner who loved it," said Luis Saldago, chief of shelter services.

It turns out that Puppy's owner, Mireya Fernandez, was on vacation in Cuba, and her granddaughter happened to see the news coverage of the lost dog in Havana.

"She called her grandmother and told her the lost dog had been on TV and she contacted us right away," Saldago said.

Fernandez and Puppy were reunited Wednesday after she got back to Florida, the Herald said.

"When he saw her, he went crazy. He couldn't wait to get out of his cage to kiss her," Saldago said.

After the reunion, Saldago gave Puppy a microchip implant.

"Next time he runs away, his owner can find him right away," he said.
