NEW YORK, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A New York man who noticed the smell of burning fur while driving in his sport utility vehicle said he found a live cat wedged in next to the muffler.

Quran Johnson said he and his family noticed the smell as they drove in Brooklyn, and when they looked under the vehicle at the end of the 15-minute drive, they spotted a cat's tail hanging down from next to the muffler, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

Police arrived and were able to free the cat, which appeared startled and had its fur singed. The feline was taken to a city shelter to be examined.
