CANBERRA, Australia, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Guinness World Records said a home in the Australian capital set a world record for lights on a residential property with a 502,165-light Christmas display.

David and Janean Richards of Canberra said they previously set the record in 2011 with a Christmas display featuring 331,038 lights and decided to go even bigger this year after the Gay family in LaGrangeville, N.Y., bested their record last year with 346,283 lights.

"Suddenly I had twice the drive," David Richards said.

He said this year's display, like the first one in 2011, is aimed at raising donations for charity SIDS and Kids.

"I'd be raising more money for SIDS and Kids and winning back our record at the same time," he said of his successful record attempt.

Richards said the display will be open to the public starting Nov. 30 and visitors will be asked to donate to SIDS and Kids, which offers counseling to families that have lost a child to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
