A Chinese woman credited the size of her 13-pound, 10-ounce newborn to her diet of milk, eggs and fruit while pregnant.
The 27-year-old Shanghai woman told Chinese state TV she believes her eating habits led to the infant being born at an advanced size, Sky News reported Monday.
"I drink one glass of milk [and] eat an egg every day. That's a must since I became pregnant. I also ate a lot of fruit," the mother said.
Doctors at the hospital where the baby was born said the mother's diet, the fact that she spent much of her pregnancy in bed and her rapid weight gain during the early stages of pregnancy likely contributed to the infant's size.
Xu Chang'en, associate chief physician of the obstetrics department of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University, said the child may be at risk for health problems including obesity and diabetes in the future.
The largest newborn on record in China was a 15-pound, 8-ounce infant born in 2012 in Xinxiang, Henan Province.
