SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- San Francisco converted itself into Gotham City on Friday for a 5-year-old Batman fan with leukemia.

The effort, kicked off by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, involved many institutions.

The Gotham City Chronicle ran an article bylined Lois Lane (Superman's reporter girlfriend) and headlined "Penguin can't hide from the Batkid. The U.S. Attorney's Office issued a press release that the Riddler and Penguin have been charged with conspiracy and kidnapping and "face long prison sentences thanks to Batkid."

Miles Scott has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia since he was 20 months old, the Los Angeles Times reported. The disease has been in remission since June.

Friday's effort involved at least 12,000 volunteers. Miles rescued a woman from cable-car tracks and arrested the Riddler, both feats watched by cheering crowds.

Enthusiasm for Batkid spread outside San Francisco. Messages came from members of Congress and from President Obama.

"Way to go, Miles. Way to save Gotham," the president said in a short video.
