PITTSBURGH, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers' Troy Polamalu said he will undergo a ceremonial haircut Monday at Heinz Field to benefit Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Although Polamalu will only lose a 3-inch lock, the cut will mark the first time scissors have touched his hair in a decade, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

"Troy Polamalu has one of the most famous heads of hair in America," John Hamilton, VFW adjutant general, said. "To have him take a role in our efforts is appreciated."

The cut is part of the VFW's "Mane Event," in which participants collect donations, get a haircut and post the results online, the Tribune-Review reported.

Polamalu said he is discouraged by the lack of support for veterans.

"Unfortunately, we live in a society now that is all about, 'What have you done for me lately?' " he says. "Once a veteran is done with his service, we just kind of forget about him. I don't think anybody could argue against the fact that they've done more for this country than any other person."

He and his wife are the founders of the Harry Panos Fund for Veterans, which provides support for military charities.
