AMERICAN FORK, Utah, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- A boy who weighed in at 14 pounds when he was born at a hospital in Utah appears to be the biggest baby born in the United States so far this year.

His mother, Sara Brandon, told KSL-TV in Salt Lake City this week that Joel Brandon Jr., now almost 6 months old, has continued to be above average. He wears the same size diapers as his 2-year-old twin sisters, who weighed only 4 pounds each at birth.

Brandon said she and her husband have been keeping an eye out for other plus-size births. So far, they've found Joel outweighed Addyson Gale Cessna, who was 13 pounds 7 ounces at his birth in Pennsylvania, and a German baby who weighed in at 13.74 pounds in July.

Brandon is out of the running for the world's biggest baby of 2013. George King, born in February in England, will wind up the world record-holder for the year, unless another baby heavier than 15 pounds 7 ounces arrives by Dec. 31.

"We've kind of been watching and waiting to see if there is a [U.S.] baby who is bigger, because he might be the biggest of the year," Brandon said. "We thought it was pretty funny we had Germany beat, and so far we haven't heard of a bigger one."

J.J., as he is nicknamed, was delivered by Caesarean section at Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem on May 9.

Brandon's doctor describes J.J. as being at the 150th percentile for height and weight. At 4 months, he weighed 23 pounds.

"He'll probably just be a big, tall guy but he'll probably slim down as he gets into his toddler years," Brandon said.

Brandon said her Type 1 diabetes, a tall father and a family with plus-size genes appear to be responsible for J.J.'s size.
