INDIAN HILLS, Colo., Oct. 31 (UPI) -- A Colorado couple whose Honda Element was torn apart by bears said the animals may have been attracted by a package of gum and some mints.

Bob and Kristen Monzel of Indian Hills said a delivery driver knocked on their door early Tuesday and alerted them to the destruction that befell their vehicle during the night, KMGH-TV, Denver, reported Thursday.

"I was floored," Bob Monzel said. "I really underestimated the power of a bear. They really kind of destroyed it."

The couple said the bears, believed to be a mother and her two cubs seen in the area recently, completely shredded the interior of the car and left claw marks all over the exterior.

"I was stunned," Kristen Monzel said, "because I just never imagined anything like that."

The couple said a package of gum and some mints left in the car may have attracted the bears.

The Monzels said they are awaiting an assessment from their insurance company.
