Smartphone stops bullet during robbery

WINTER GARDEN, Fla., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Police in Florida say a gas station clerk's smartphone may have saved his life when it stopped a bullet fired at his chest during a robbery.

Investigators said a customer at the Hess gas station in Winter Garden pulled out a revolver Monday and demanded the clerk open the safe, CNN reported Tuesday.

The clerk was unable to open the safe, and a second worker who arrived on the scene was also unsuccessful, police said.

The robber fired off a single bullet as he fled from the store.

One of the clerks complained of chest pains while speaking to emergency responders, police said.

"So they started looking at the clerk. That's when they realized that the guy had actually shot at him, hit him, struck his cellphone, and the cellphone had stopped his bullet," Winter Garden police Lt. Scott Allen said.

The man was not seriously injured and was released after being examined at a hospital. However, his HTC smartphone was shattered.

"I've seen individuals get shot with low-caliber handguns and I've seen it be life ending. So, for this gentleman to be as lucky as he is, it's a good day for us," Allen said.

Police were attempting to identify a suspect.
