MURRIETA, Calif., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Firefighters in California said they disassembled a dashboard to free a kitten that spent hours trapped in a woman's car.

Murrieta firefighters said a Lake Elsinore woman came to Fire Station 1 Wednesday and said she heard a mewing sound coming from her dashboard during her drive to work in Murrieta -- and heard the sound again when she returned to her car after work, The Press-Enterprise (Riverside, Calif.) reported Friday.

Firefighters disassembled the dashboard and discovered a kitten had been trapped inside the car. The firefighters said they do not know how the kitten got inside, but the animal was lucky it did not wander deeper into the more dangerous parts of the vehicle.

Matt Corelli, a spokesman for the Murrieta Fire Department, said the kitten did not appear to be injured or distressed.

Corelli said the woman took the kitten with her in the hopes of finding its owner.
