HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A Nova Scotia woman said she is searching for the wedding ring her grandfather traded for a pint of beer more than 60 years ago.

Natalie Aalders said her grandfather long claimed to have lost his wedding ring down a drain while performing kitchen duty during his military service in Halifax in the 1950s, but he revealed to her after her recent wedding that he had traded it for a pint of beer during a three-day drinking binge, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Wednesday.

Aalders said her grandmother had long suspected the kitchen sink story was a fabrication.

"She wasn't surprised. She knew he had had a drinking problem and had to get him out [of] a few jams," Aalders said.

Aalders said she is now hoping to track down the ring and return it to her now 80-year-old grandfather, who is still married to her grandmother and living in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. She said her ad on classified website Kijiji has been viewed thousands of times, but she has yet to receive any leads on the ring's location.

"I imagine the ring is long gone, but figured I would post this on the far off chance that someone would remember him and still have the ring, and possibly discuss how I can get it back for him while he is still around, maybe in time for Christmas," she wrote in the ad.

Aalders said her grandfather gave up drinking a long time ago.
