Czech artist gives president 33-foot middle finger

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Czech artist David Cerny expressed his disapproval of the country's president with a 33-foot-high sculpture of a hand flipping the bird at Prague Castle.

Cerny's installation, a purple hand sculpture with an oversized middle finger outstretched in a gesture directed at the sear of Czech President Milos Zeman, appeared on a barge in the Vltava River in the early hours Monday, The Prague Post reported Tuesday.

The artist is known to dislike Zeman and worked on the presidential campaign for rival Karel Schwarzenberg in last year's elections. The new art comes shortly before Oct. 25-26 special elections for Parliament.

"Our president is just another reason not to live in the Czech Republic," Cerny told The Prague Post in September. "The political system here is not good, most people know that. I think I'd be happy to live in New York and not come back. I mean, I would come back, maybe for like three months in the year or something."

A spokesman for Zeman said the president is currently out of the country and he could not comment on the piece because he had not seen it.
