Sheep to get a new home after escaping slaughter in Detroit

DETROIT, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Animal rescuers in Detroit said a sheep that wandered into a business after apparently escaping slaughter will live out its life at a new home.

Allen Oleszko, co-owner of Nortown Collision & Glass, said the sheep ran into the facility through an open bay door Tuesday and workers handed it over to the Michigan Humane Society, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday.

Ryan McTigue, a spokesman for the humane society, said the sheep was taken Wednesday to the society's facility in Rochester Hills, which is used to dealing with unusual strays.

"We've had chickens. We've had goats. We've had similar animals," he said.

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said investigators have not determined the sheep's original owners, but it is believed to have escaped slaughter.

"It did have the tagging and branding that would suggest that the animal is properly licensed and sold to a butcher or slaughterhouse," he said.

However, that will not be the animal's fate.

"He got away. He deserves his life. He deserves to be free," Woody said.

The humane society said the sheep is likely to be adopted by SASHA Farm Animal Sanctuary in Manchester.
