LEAGUE CITY, Texas, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Police in Texas said a mother is facing charges for allegedly making her 10-year-old son get out of her car and walk at the side of a busy freeway.

The League City Police Department said officers responded to a report of a young boy walking at the side of the South Gulf Freeway in League City around 8:30 p.m. Monday and they discovered the boy had been walking for about 15 minutes and was several miles from his home, The Houston Chronicle reported Thursday.

Police said the stretch of freeway has been the site of several collisions recently.

Officers found the boy's mother, Angela Graciela Garcia, 34, pulled over to the side of the road in her white Audi out of sight of the boy.

Police said Garcia forced the boy to get out of the car and walk as a punishment following an argument.

Garcia was arrested on a charge of abandoning and endangering a child. She was held in lieu of $7,500 bond.

The boy and another son who was riding in the car were released into the custody of their father.
