Brittanie Penrose and Aaron Lanari said they each put a handwritten note into the old wine bottle following a date in Oceanside, Calif., three years ago and then tossed the bottle off the Oceanside Pier, the Pacific Daily News, Guam, reported Tuesday.
George Washington High School freshman Javier Sanchez, 14, discovered the bottle Thursday on Boonie Beach Road in Talofofo during the International Coastal Cleanup.
"I totally forgot all about it," said Penrose, whose note encouraged the finder to look her up on Facebook.
Penrose said she was recovering from cancer when she wrote the note.
"It's OK for right now," she said. "I'm starting to gain weight back now."
Lanari said he thought the bottle would be a fun idea for their date, but he never expected it to travel as far as Guam.
"I just thought it would be a really great date idea," he said. "I gave her some paper and I said 'Write whatever you want.'"
