JOENKOEPING, Sweden, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Police in a Swedish town find themselves in the unlikely position of adoption agents for 28 poodles seized from a boarding house in poor conditions.

After posting the need for adoptive homes for the pooches, police in Joenkoeping said their Facebook page has been inundated, with 2,000 people sharing a post about the dogs. The phone has been ringing off the hook at the station, as well, TheLocal.se said.

Police said they were called to a boarding house after neighbors complained and found the dogs, many of which were malnourished and suffering from various ailments. The decision was made to take the dogs into police custody.

Since then, officers have stashed them at a kennel where one gave birth to two puppies -- bringing the number from an original 26 dogs to the 28 available for adoption.
