Man drives Volvo 3 million miles

NEW YORK, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- A New York state man told NBC's "Today" show in New York he has driven his 1966 Volvo P1800 a record 3 million miles.

Irv Gordon, 74, a retired teacher, appeared on the program in 2002 to show off his red Volvo, which he had driven a Guinness World Record-setting 2 million miles -- and he returned to "Today" Tuesday to show how he had put another million miles on the car since his last appearance.

Gordon first achieved the world record for most miles driven by a single person in a non-commercial vehicle at 1.69 million miles in 1998.

He went over 3 million Sept. 15 on a road trip in Alaska.

"It's just terrific,'' Gordon said of his car. "I'm getting used to it. It's the third time around."

Gordon said the car still has its original engine.

"It's got a lot of memories, you bet,'' he said. "You buy a quality car to begin with, and then you just follow the owner's manual. The people that wrote the book are the people that built the car."

Gordon said he would consider selling the car, but only for a hefty sum.

"A dollar a mile [on the odometer], you can take it home tonight,'' Gordon said.
