Police: Paddle boat getaway fails when vessel sinks

WATERFORD, Mich., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Authorities in Michigan said a man fleeing from police was captured when his paddle boat sank and he was forced to swim to shore.

Waterford Police and Michigan Department of Corrections agents said they went to the Waterford home of Mark Steven Rood, 27, at 10 a.m. Friday to arrest him on a felony fugitive warrant for absconding from probation, The Detroit News reported Tuesday.

Rood's father, Mark Steven Rood Sr., allegedly tried to block officers while his son fled on foot.

The younger Rood allegedly fled to the lakeside and took a neighbor's paddle boat in an attempt to escape via the water.

However, the boat sank and Rood was forced to swim to shore, where he was arrested.

Rood and his father were arraigned Saturday on charges of felony obstructing. The elder man was held in lieu of $20,000 cash bond and his son was ordered held on $25,000 cash bond.
