Norwegian customs: Smuggler hid cigarettes, alcohol in coffin

HALDEN, Norway, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Norwegian authorities said a customs officer at the Swedish border discovered 20,000 cigarettes and about 130 gallons of liquor hidden in a casket.

Investigators said the customs officer became suspicious of a Latvian driver who claimed to be bringing a Norwegian home for burial Monday and officers popped open the coffin to discover the cigarettes and alcohol instead of a human corpse, The Local.no reported Tuesday.

The driver is facing smuggling charges, officials said.

"It demonstrates just how imaginative smugglers can be," said Paul Horne of the Ostfold police.
