57 commemorative footballs taken from man's truck

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said an auto burglar left behind a laptop computer and instead took about 57 commemorative University of Florida championship footballs.

Daytona Beach police said Ian Erwin, 24, told investigators his doors had been locked but the rear sliding window of his 2008 Dodge Ram had been left open 6 to 8 inches when it was broken into on the evening of Sept. 18 while he was inside the Crook's Den bar, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported Friday.

Erwin told police the burglar did not touch his laptop computer and instead stole the deflated footballs, which are designed to look like they're made of alligator skin to commemorate the university's 2008 National Championship.

Erwin said a university booster gave him the balls to distribute at events hosted by his employer, the state Department of Health.

Police said another car parked nearby also had been rifled and the owner reported his military identification stolen.
