AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- The Dutch artist behind a life-sized sculpture of a human skull constructed from gelatin and cocaine says the piece is about "the nature of man."

The artist, who goes by the name Diddo, said his sculpture, "Ecce Animal," was constructed from gelatin and "street sourced" cocaine that laboratory tests found to be 15 percent to 20 percent pure, DutchNews.nl reported Thursday.

"Ecce Animal is not intended to be a parable on the self-destructiveness of addiction or substance abuse," the artist told Bullet Magazine. "I don't want to over-intellectualize, but it's the fusion of two icons that provokes thought and discussion on the nature of man. Specifically, about his creation of, and participation in, a society which echoes his own tendency to lose control."

Diddo said he couldn't speak to the legality of the sculpture due to an agreement he signed with his patron.

"As this was a commissioned piece, I'm under a pretty binding non-disclosure agreement, and thus unable to provide too much information," he said.
