SAN DIEGO, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Border Patrol agents discovered a man swimming off the coast of California with 52.43 pounds of marijuana.

Officials said Border Patrol agents stationed in San Diego responded to a report of a man in the water around 11 p.m. Thursday and the 55-year-old man was discovered floating on a duffle bag about 600 yards offshore.

The man told agents he was a Mexican national who did not have the proper documents to be in the United States. He was found to be carrying 52.43 pounds of marijuana in his duffle bag.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the marijuana is worth an estimated $23,594.

The man was taken into custody.
