Piglet's tumble off slaughter truck saves his bacon

Sept. 24, 2013 at 5:17 PM   |   Comments

BROSSARD, Quebec, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A piglet's accidental tumble off the back of a slaughterhouse truck truly saved his Canadian bacon, an animal shelter owner said.

Quebec provincial police were patrolling Highway 30 near Brossard Wednesday when they were called by motorists who saw the piglet walking down the side of the road.

Other witnesses said they were driving behind a truck carrying a load of piglets headed to a local farm where they would be prepared for slaughter when they saw the little oinker wiggle his way through a gap in the back of the truck and tumble off, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.

The officers called animal control workers who came and scooped up the piglet. After some online research, the piglet was taken to Wishing Well animal shelter north of Toronto where he was evaluated and treated for a few minor scrapes and bruises from the ordeal.

The shelter's owner, Brenda Bronfman, said the piglet, since named Yoda, is all manner of cute and cuddly -- and lucky.

"He just loves to crawl into people's laps and be held. He's a little angel," she said.

Wishing Well adopts animals for life, so Bronfman said little Yoda, now sporting a sweater for warmth, will live out his days on the shelter's farm.
