Russian police escort bear cubs out of town

BEREZOVSKY, Russia, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Police in Berezovsky, Russia, said officers escorted a trio of bear cubs from the center of the town into nearby woods.

Police said a woman reported spotting a bear cub "looking for food in the garbage bins" in a central town square late Thursday and five officers responded -- to discover three cubs wandering the area, RIA Novosti reported Friday.

A police statement said the officers "escorted the uninvited guests into the woods. They followed the bear cubs in their patrol cars and lit the way with their headlights. The trip took more than an hour."

Police said the cubs may have been the orphaned offspring of a female bear killed by a freight train in July.
