Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A California paramedic said he helped his wife deliver their baby in an elementary school parking lot when they couldn't reach the hospital in time. Nathan Lindsay said he was driving his wife, Portia, to Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz Sept. 3 when it became clear they weren't going to make it in time for the birth, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported Wednesday. Advertisement Lindsay said he didn't even have time to call 911 when he pulled into the parking lot at Bay View Elementary and helped Portia deliver their son. "I did what I'd been trained to do," he said. "It was real easy, it was kind of textbook ... a couple pushes, top shoulder, bottom shoulder and he came right out." Lindsay said he had to free newborn Nathan George Lindsay from his amniotic sac to allow the infant to take his first breath. Lindsay took his wife and newborn the rest of the way to the hospital, where the infant weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces. The father said his son already has a nickname. "Pilot," he said. "Since he was born in a Honda Pilot." Advertisement
