Military training grenade found at Oregon roadside

LA PINE, Ore., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Authorities in Oregon said a person picking up litter at the side of a road discovered a military training grenade that was found to be live.

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office said the person discovered the grenade at the side of Burgess Road in La Pine just prior to 3 p.m. Saturday and alerted authorities, KPTV, Portland, reported Tuesday.

The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene and identified the object as a military training grenade that had been reactivated. Investigators said it appeared to have been on the side of the road for a long period of time and likely was not meant to target a person.

The origins of the object were being investigated.
