Mighty Mike the alligator headed back to Kentucky

Sept. 16, 2013 at 5:45 PM

NEWPORT, Ky., Sept. 16 (UPI) -- A Kentucky aquarium said a 14-foot-long alligator on his way to a third stay at the facility is expected to be around for about five years.

The Newport Aquarium, where Mighty Mike the 800-pound gator previously stayed for five months in 2011 and about a year in 2012, said the gator is scheduled to arrive at his old enclosure Wednesday and will go on display Thursday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Monday.

Alligator trapper Bruce Shwedick of the Florida Crocodilian Conservation Center took possession of Mighty Mike in 2000 when he was called to shoot the gator at Lake Talquin, Fla.

Shwedick said Mighty Mike's size inspired him to capture the alligator instead of destroying him.
