IRSEE, Germany, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A German village where officials have been unable to locate a snapping turtle is planting traps purchased from the United States.
Officials in Irsee said turtle, dubbed Lotti by locals, has managed to elude capture since biting an 8-year-old swimmer's Achilles tendon in the Oggenreider lake despite measures including draining the lake and going over the area with a giant rake, The Local.de reported Thursday.
Irsee Mayor Andreas Lieb said it will take about a week for the lake to be refilled and traps imported from the United States will then be placed to catch for the elusive amphibian.
Lieb said anyone who chooses to go into the lake once it is refilled will be swimming at "their own risk."
The turtle has yet to be spotted or photographed, but doctors diagnosed the boy's injury in early August as a bite from a snapping turtle.
