150-pound watermelon stolen from Maryland man's garden

BEL AIR, Md., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A 150-pound watermelon worth an estimated $1,500 has been stolen from a field in Maryland, investigators say.

Harford County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ed Hopkins said someone stole the watermelon Friday from the home of Brad Northcote, who lives about 15 miles north of Bel Air, WMAR-TV, Baltimore, reported Tuesday.

"I'm just amazed at the effort someone went to in order to steal a watermelon," Northcote said. "You really need a strategy for a theft like this; not just because of the size, but it was located on the most inaccessible part of the property.

Hopkins said investigators estimate the worth of the melon at about $1,500.

"From what we can tell, they cut the line and removed the watermelon," Hopkins said. "Nothing else was taken."
