PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- The Oregon Zoo says three baby African lions born over the weekend are doing well but are being kept with their mother in seclusion from the other lions.

The zoo in Portland said 6-year-old lion Neka gave birth to three cubs, her first litter, between 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Saturday, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Monday.

"So far she seems to be taking to motherhood quite naturally," said Jennifer Davis, the zoo's curator for Africa and primates. "There's still a lot that could happen, so we're being very cautious and giving her as much quiet time as possible."

Chris Pfefferkorn, deputy director of living collections for the zoo, said the cubs' movement and vocal activity indicates they are healthy.
