Irsee Mayor Andreas Lieb said authorities have been trying in vain to find the animal, nicknamed Lotti, that bit an 8-year-old boy through the Achilles tendon while he was swimming in Oggenrieder pond three weeks ago and the village blacksmith has now been commissioned to create a giant rake to search for the turtle, German newspaper Bild reported via a translator.
Lieb said the rake will be available in three or four weeks.
Lotti is suspected of being either an alligator snapping turtle or a common snapping turtle.
Lieb said alligator snapping turtles, native to the United States, are experts at camouflage and can hide out for more than two hours without food.
