Police: Bank robber fell 21 stories in garbage chute

SYRACUSE, N.Y., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Police in New York state said a man accused of robbing a bank attempted to flee police through a garbage chute and fell 21 floors.

Syracuse police said Robin Gutheridge, 26, used a threatening note Thursday to rob a Chase Bank location in the city and he was seen fleeing into the nearly Clinton Plaza Apartments building, The (Syracuse) Post-Standard reported Friday.

Detectives searching the building were soon informed a maintenance worker had heard someone calling for help from the trash compactor area of the basement and they investigated to find Gutheridge trapped near the bottom of the garbage chute.

Police said Gutheridge is believed to have climbed into the chute on the 21st floor of the building and fell to the basement.

Firefighters freed Gutheridge and he was taken to the Upstate University Hospital. Police said he will face a third-degree robbery charge when he is released.
