DENVER, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Officials at the Denver Zoo said a woman sought hospital treatment for a rhinoceros bite to her hand.

The zoo said the woman was bitten on the hand Wednesday by a black rhino named Mshindi during a "rhino experience" program that allows zoo visitors to feed the animal, The Denver Post reported Thursday.

"This is a terrible accident. We feel horrible for the woman involved," said Brian Aucone, the zoo's vice president for animal care. "Mshindi is a gentle animal. We believe this was an accident and that he was not trying to hurt anyone."

Aucone said the program has been suspended, but Mshindi will not be removed from public display.

The severity of the woman's injury was not released by the zoo.
