EL PASO, Texas, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A couple was married on a bridge spanning the United States and Mexico, the groom on one side of the border and the bride on the other.

Edgar Falcon, 27, who stood on the U.S. side for most of the ceremony Tuesday, and Maricruz Valtierra, 25, were married Tuesday on the Paso del Norte International Bridge spanning the Rio Grande between El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico, the El Paso Times reported.

U.S. immigration rules ban the bride, a citizen of Mexico, from crossing the border. She was penalized by immigration authorities after an older sister declared her an American citizen at the border, seven years ago, the newspaper said.

Anyone making a false declaration of immigration status at the border is prohibited from re-entering the United States under a 1990s law.

"We are getting married to show that immigration laws affect not only undocumented immigrants in the United States but also U.S. citizens like myself, who want to be united with our loved ones," Falcon said after the ceremony, officiated by Texas State District Judge Bill Moody as Border Patrol agents watched.

"To celebrate, we'll have breakfast in a Juarez restaurant, and then I need to get back to El Paso," the groom added.
