PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Organizers of an Oregon attempt to set the world record for the largest gathering of redheads said they won't know if they made their goal for a few months.

Rusty Wiese, an organizer of the Saturday event at Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square, said participants won't get word from Guinness World Records adjudicators for two or three months, but unofficial counts put the number of natural redheads at 1,300 to 1,600, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Monday.

The group aimed to beat the record of 1,255 redheads, set last year in in Breda, Netherlands.

Guinness officials required all participants to bring color photos of themselves as children to prove red is their natural hair color.
