The Old Saybrook Office of Emergency Management said an emergency dispatcher's error Sunday afternoon led to the public address speakers placed around town falsely warning residents of a terrorist attack in the area and warning people to seek shelter, WVIT-TV, New Britain, Conn., reported.
The Everbridge Emergency Notification System was utilized to make reverse-911 calls to residents and apologize for the error.
"There is no emergency, and there is no homeland security crisis in or near the Town of Old Saybrook," the message said.
The Office of Emergency Management said an investigation is being carried out into the actions of the dispatcher.
