ELLICOTT, N.Y., Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Four western New York teens spent 4 hours locked in a vault after a weekend party went awry, police said.

Four teens ages 18 and 19 were allegedly drinking and smoking marijuana in Ellicott, N.Y., about 70 miles south of Buffalo, inside a large vault built into the side of a building. The vault was formerly part of the town clerk's office but the building has subsequently been sold to a private owner, the Jamestown (N.Y.) Post-Journal reported.

The owner had given the teens permission to be in the building, police said.

The teens were partying inside the vault, which firefighters said is large enough all four could walk and move freely inside, when the door closed and they were locked inside.

After firefighters couldn't get the door open they called a locksmith who cracked the safe and freed the teens.

Police allegedly found a large amount of alcohol and some marijuana inside the vault. Charges are pending further investigation.

The report did not say how firefighters were alerted to the situation.
