NANAIMO, British Columbia, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- A British Columbia petting zoo said it is closing for the remainder of the summer due to the theft of a mother rabbit, her litter of babies and two ducks.

The Cedar 4-H Club, which runs the Beban Park petting barn in Nanaimo, said the burglars took a mother rabbit, about six babies, two muscovy ducks, two wheelbarrows and hay bales, the Nanaimo Daily News reported Wednesday.

Officials said the theft took place Saturday night or Sunday morning.

The club said burglars previously struck the petting barn, which is designed to teach children about farm animals, overnight June 29-30 and took about the same number of rabbits.

Linda Barnett, Cedar 4-H Club district supervisor, said officials do not know why someone would steal from the facility.

"I have not a clue," Barnett said. "This time they've had a vehicle, I can tell you that much from the amount of stuff they took."

Police were investigating the thefts but had yet to make any arrests, officials said.

Barnett said the petting barn is closing for the remainder of the summer as a result of the thefts.

"The owners of animals are getting very spooked and scared of leaving their animals there," Barnett said. "When you're talking a horse, worth [$960], and donkeys at [$1,440] to [$1,728], people get pretty spooked so unfortunately we've had to close it down."
