Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Officials at the Lowry Park Zoo in Florida announced an African elephant calf has been born at the facility, the second in seven months. The Tampa zoo said first-time mother Matjeka gave birth to a girl at 11:20 p.m. July 29, just seven months after another member of the zoo's herd gave birth. Advertisement The newborn and the 7-month-old calf were both sired by Swaziland bull elephant Sdudla. The zoo said its herd of 11 elephants were rescued from Swaziland and brought to the United States a decade ago. "Thanks to ongoing support from the Tampa Bay community, we have the animal care professionals, space, and facilities to do our part for elephant species survival," said Craig Pugh, executive director and chief executive officer of Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo. "Guests at the zoo can be up close to elephant families seen less often in Africa. Successful elephant families are the building blocks for species survival."
