GIOIA TAURO, Italy, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The owner of the Vedova Nera Sexy Shop in southern Italy says a man accused of detonating a bomb at the shop was envious of the shop's success.

Police said Salvatore Infantino set off the bomb in April, weeks after the shop opened in Gioia Tauro along the Mediterranean coast, Quotidiano.net reported. The explosion was so powerful it damaged buildings and cars parked nearby.

The owner said the bomb caused almost $20,000 damage to the shop, which was not insured, Metropolis Web said.

Other Italian media said the attack may have been motivated by moral objection to a sex shop.

Gioia Tauro has been hit by a number of bomb attacks in recent months, Il Quotidiano della Calabria reported. A bomb exploded at a gas station in the town last September, five months after a furniture shop was hit.

Car bombs have also been planted in the town.
