French clothier criticized for $376 'unemployed' sweater

PARIS, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- French Twitter users reacted angrily to a Paris clothing brand marketing sweaters bearing the French word for "unemployed" for $376.

Leon Taieb, owner of the Le Leon website, had become the target of many critical posts on Twitter as a result of adding the sweaters bearing the word "chomeur," which translates as "unemployed" or "jobless," to the brand's online store, The Local.fr reported Thursday.

Twitter users accused Taieb of mocking those affected by France's record unemployment rate.

"How shameful! To take the piss in this way. Show your support! #indecency #jobless #ban," one Twitter post read.

Other users accused the brand of sexism for including the masculine term "chomeur," but not the feminine equivalent, "chomeuse."

"They are hideous, deplorable and sexist. But it doesn't stop these tops from leleon.fr from going viral," Twitter user @RaphaelFerber posted.

Taieb brushed aside the criticism.

"People really shouldn't take it seriously," he said of the shirt during a Thursday interview with FranceTVinfo. "I just wanted something cute. The word 'chomeuse' for example, sounds less cute -- that's why the top only exists for men.
