KATO AMBELIA, Greece, July 23 (UPI) -- Greek police said a 16-year-old boy who claimed to have accidentally shot himself admitted he injured himself on purpose to impress a girl.

Investigators said the teenager in Kato Ambelia initially told officers he shot himself in the foot accidentally Sunday while attempting to ward off a home intruder, but the teen admitted Tuesday he shot himself in the foot on purpose with his father's unlicensed gun in an attempt to impress a girl with his concocted story, Ekathimerini.com reported Tuesday.

Doctors said the teenager is expected to make a full recovery.

The boy's father is facing charges of illegal gun possession and neglect, police said.
