UFA, Russia, July 19 (UPI) -- Russian prosecutors said they are investigating a rehab clinic accused of locking addicts in coffins to provide them with a glimpse of their futures.

The prosecutor's office in the Bashkortostan Republic said it is looking into allegations the Navigator rehab clinic beat addicts and shut them in coffins to give them "a sense of what is in store if they don't stop using drugs," RIA Novosti reported Friday.

A representative for the prosecutor's office said the director of the clinic told investigators the "funeral" was meant to show the addicts their future would be "just a coffin and cold earth" if they remained addicted to drugs.

The representative said experts are being consulted to determine whether the treatment is a legitimate and effective technique.
