UNION, N.J., July 16 (UPI) -- Police in New Jersey said a pair of off-duty officers helped them arrest two bank robbery suspects, including one hiding in the trunk of a car.

Union Township Police Director Dan Zeiser said the PNC Bank in Union Township was robbed of $2,000 at gunpoint Monday morning and Debbie Teixeira, an off-duty detective with the Newark Police Department, saw a man run from the bank and drop a handgun in a nearby parking lot, The (Newark) Star-Ledger reported Tuesday.

Andrew Diamond, an off-duty New Providence police officer, saw a man running down the street and drive off in a Hyundai. He wrote down the license plate number and gave it to township officers.

Township officers pulled over Saboor Ali, 54, and found Thomas McDaniel, 42, hiding in the trunk of the vehicle with a bag of money and "other evidence that tied him into the crime," Zeiser said.

Ali and McDaniel were charged with armed robbery, weapons possession counts, resisting arrest, obstruction and several motor vehicle violations.

The weapon abandoned in the parking lot turned out to be a fake gun, Zeiser said.
