PHILADELPHIA, July 3 (UPI) -- Officials in Philadelphia said 4 1/2 tons of free hoagies were given out on Independence Mall for Wawa Hoagie Day.

The sandwiches, along with drinks and chips, were distributed Monday following Mayor Michael Nutter's proclamation naming the day Wawa Hoagie Day, part of the city's Wawa Welcome America Festival leading up to Independence Day, the Philadelphia Daily News reported Wednesday.

The day was dedicated to doling out the free sandwiches and honoring police, firefighters and military service members, officials said.

The celebrations included a the Hoagies for Heroes hoagie-building contest, which saw the police department come out ahead of the fire department and the Pennsylvania Air National Guard defeat the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
